How can donors cover the transaction fees? (Plus: customizable Add-On Gifts)

Whether they're donating to your building project, purchasing a ticket for an event, or paying tuition, your church can request or require your members to help cover the transaction fees on a payment.

PLUS: Build in other add-on gift options to invite members to add a set amount or a percentage to their payment to help cover other projects or fundraising efforts at your church. The possibilities are endless!

Add-On Gift Basics

There are three types of Add-On Gifts

  1. Specify a set amount
  2. Add a percentage of the original gift
  3. Cover transaction fees

Add-on gifts are set on a Fund-by-Fund basis, meaning you must visit the settings for each specific Fund to specify any add-on gifts you want presented, and which Fund a member is giving to will determine which add-on gift options they are prompted with.

You have the power to customize each Add-On gift so that the options are presented to your members to fit your needs and the money collected from each Add-On gift is attributed to the specific fund of your choice.

Each fund can have up to three Add-On gifts displayed to members before finalizing their transactions.


How to allow donors to cover transaction fees

For each payment made in Flocknote, you will pay our industry-standard transaction fees (you can read more about that here.) In most cases, the easy-to-share, user-friendly nature of Flocknote's online giving will result in raising enough money to more than makeup for what you pay in fees when compared to raising funds without Flocknote.

However, if you want to invite (or require) members to help cover those transaction fees you can do so by following these simple steps:

  1. First, you will need to have Online & Mobile Giving enabled on your network (available at no extra monthly or set-up cost for all Flocknote networks.) Learn how to get started here.
  2. Visit the Giving tab on your network.
  3. Click on the Fund of your choice (each Fund will have its own Add-On Gift settings, so you will need to repeat these steps if you would like this option on multiple Funds.)
  4. After opening up the specific Fund, click on the Settings Cogwheel found in the gray toolbar to the right of the Fund name.



  5. Within the Fund Settings menu, scroll down until you see the dark Add-on Gifts section.
  6. Click the blue Create an Add-on Gift button.



  7. Choose Cover the Fees, the first option on the menu that appears.
  8. On the following menu, Cover transaction fees will be automatically selected. (To make this option required, be sure to check the "Require this gift" box below Cover transaction fees.)

  1. Make any preferred changes to the icon, Add-on Gift Title (how the fee will be presented to your members), and the fund that the fees paid will be added to (using the drop-down menu at the bottom of the menu), then click Save.

How to use custom Add-On Gifts to supercharge your fundraising

In addition to inviting or requiring members to cover the transaction fees, Flocknote offers customizable Add-On Gifts that you can tailor to any fundraising effort your team dreams up!

Once you follow steps 1 through 6 listed above, the Choose a Template menu offers the following options:

  1. Cover the fees (instructions above)
  2. Premade templates you can start with and customize to fit your needs
  3. The option to start from scratch building your own custom Add-On gift
  4. Access to existing gifts you have created on other funds, without having to recreate them from scratch each time.

Once you have made your selection, you will see the settings window that allows you to customize your selection with options:

    1. Choose an icon
    2. Give your Add-On Give a Title (the description your members will see listed with this Add-On Gift)
    3. Select the Type of gift, there are three options:
      1. Specify a set amount allows you to enter a dollar amount members can choose to tack on to their payment (like $10 to support the Sunday School program.) You may check a box to allow the giver to adjust that amount, or leave it unchecked.
      2. Add a percentage of the original gift allows you to set a percentage that members can choose to add to their payment for a particular cause
      3. Cover the transaction fees which automatically calculate based on the gift amount and allows the option to make this Add-On required (automatically added to every gift.)
    4. Choose the fund that you wish the Add-On gifts to be attributed to (which can be the same or different from the fund on which you've added the Add-On gift to be displayed to members.)

You can add up to three Add-On gifts to each fund.

You can edit existing Add-On gifts by navigating to the Fund settings. Just scroll down to the Add-On Gifts section of the menu, hover over the Add-On Gift you'd like to edit, and click on the pencil icon.


What do my members see when they make a gift?

Before finalizing their transaction, your members will see the Add-On Gift(s) available for this fund displayed with the icons and titles you set. Clicking the blue Add button beside each Gift will add that amount to their payment and update their transaction total.

Note: For transaction fees, the transaction fee amount is automatically calculated based on the amount they have entered above for their payment. If you choose to have this fee required, members will not have the button to add the fee— the fee still be listed for transparency but is automatically included.

After submitting their payment, members will see a breakdown of the gift and Add-On Gifts included in their payment. The emailed receipt will also include this itemized breakdown.


How can I track what was collected via Add-On Gifts?

When viewing the transactions for a particular fund, you will see two new icons popping up in line with specific transactions:

  • Gift box icon - This notes that this transaction included a custom Add-On Gift. Hover over the icon to see the title of the Add-On Gift(s) this member included.
  • Smiley face icon - This notes that this member covered the transaction fees on this payment.
